Considered the most beautiful route on Kilimanjaro, Lemosho crosses the mountain from the west with two full days above 3,500m before the summit push. The extra acclimatisation and low foot traffic give this route one of the highest success rates on the mountain.

Arrival in Moshi
Your Mmeku Tours representative meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and drives you the short 45 minutes to your hotel at the foot of the mountain in Moshi. There is time to rest, shower, and shake off the flight.
Later in the afternoon your lead guide joins you for a full trek briefing: route, weather window, daily rhythm, hydration, altitude protocols, and a hands-on kit check to make sure every item on the packing list is trek-ready. Dinner is at your leisure in town.
Note: Hotel cost includes breakfast only. Check-in from 2:00 PM.

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
After breakfast we drive around the mountain to the remote Londorossi Gate (2,100m) on the western side, passing coffee farms and small villages. Park formalities and a hot lunch precede a short transfer to the Lemosho trailhead.
The trail eases you in through moss-hung montane rainforest. Black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and turacos are frequent company. You reach Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp in the late afternoon, with hot drinks, washing water, and dinner waiting under the mess tent.

Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
A steady climb takes you out of the rainforest and into the giant heather zone. The vegetation shortens, the sky opens, and you meet the strange, otherworldly plants of the heather and moorland belt.
Cresting the Shira Ridge (about 3,600m) you get your first proper view across the Shira Plateau to the summit dome of Kibo. A gentle drop brings you into Shira 1 Camp for the night.

Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp
Today is deliberately relaxed. You cross the wide, high Shira Plateau, an ancient collapsed caldera, with Kibo constantly ahead. This is prime acclimatisation terrain.
You arrive at Shira 2 by lunchtime. After a rest, your guide leads a short hike higher up the ridge so you climb high and sleep low, before returning to camp for dinner and an early night.

Shira 2 to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
The classic climb-high, sleep-low day. You leave the Shira Plateau and climb steadily into the alpine desert, arriving at the striking volcanic plug of Lava Tower (4,600m) for a hot lunch.
From Lava Tower you descend into the lush Barranco Valley, walking past the surreal giant senecios and lobelias. Camp sits beneath the towering Barranco Wall, with the Western Breach and Kibo glaciers directly overhead.
Note: The 800m descent to camp is the key acclimatisation move of the whole route.

Barranco to Karanga Camp
An early start to tackle the famous Barranco Wall while it is still in shadow. The Wall looks intimidating but is a fun, hands-on scramble that most trekkers finish inside two hours, with rewarding views back to the valley.
From the top you follow a series of rolling ridges and river valleys to Karanga Camp, the last water point before high camp. Afternoon is for rest, an acclimatisation stretch, and an early dinner.

Karanga to Barafu Base Camp
A short but exposed climb through the alpine desert brings you to Barafu (Swahili for 'ice'), perched on a rocky ridge with the summit route rising directly above camp.
You reach camp by early afternoon. Lunch, gear preparation for summit night, an oximeter check, and an early dinner. Lights out around 7:00 PM, you will be woken just before midnight for the ascent.
Note: Layered summit clothing, headlamp, and full water bottles are laid out ready before sleep.

Summit day · descend to Mweka
You leave Barafu around midnight under a sky full of stars. The climb is steep and slow, in the coldest and thinnest air of the trek. Six to seven hours later you reach Stella Point on the crater rim for sunrise, then follow the rim another 45 minutes to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the roof of Africa.
After photos and a short rest at the summit, you descend the scree back to Barafu, pause for a hot meal, then continue down through the moorland to Mweka Camp in the forest edge. It is a very long day, but you will sleep as deeply as you ever have.
