Known as the Whiskey Route for its bold character, Machame is Kilimanjaro's most popular trail. Steeper than Lemosho with the same classic scenery, it climbs high and sleeps low for strong acclimatisation across five distinct climate zones.

Machame Gate to Machame Camp
After breakfast we drive to the Machame Gate for park registration. The trail climbs steadily through thick montane rainforest, expect drifting cloud, black-and-white colobus, and the drip of moss on the forest floor.
You reach Machame Camp at the upper edge of the forest belt in the late afternoon. Hot drinks, washing water and dinner are ready under the mess tent.

The trail leaves the forest and climbs steeply through the giant-heather zone. As the vegetation shortens the views open dramatically, south to Mount Meru, north to Kibo.
By early afternoon you crest the Shira Ridge and drop onto the plateau to Shira Camp. Your guide leads a short acclimatisation walk before dinner.

Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco
The climb-high, sleep-low day. You cross the alpine desert to the volcanic plug of Lava Tower for lunch, the highest point most trekkers reach before summit day.
From Lava Tower you drop 700m into the lush Barranco Valley, past giant senecios and lobelias, to camp beneath the towering Barranco Wall.
Note: The big descent to camp is the most important acclimatisation move of the trek.

Barranco to Karanga Camp
An early start puts you on the Barranco Wall while it is still in shadow. The Wall looks steep but is a fun, hands-on scramble with rewarding views back to the valley.
From the top you follow a series of rolling ridges and stream crossings to Karanga Camp, the last water point before high camp. The afternoon is rest, hydration, and an early dinner.

You arrive by early afternoon. Lunch, oximeter check, kit preparation for summit night, and an early dinner. Lights out around 7:00 PM, you will be woken just before midnight.

Summit day · descend to Mweka
You leave Barafu around midnight for the steepest, coldest climb of the trek. Six to seven hours later you reach Stella Point on the crater rim for sunrise, then follow the rim another 45 minutes to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the roof of Africa.
After summit photos you descend the scree back to Barafu, pause for a hot meal, and continue down through moorland to Mweka Camp on the forest edge. A very long day, followed by the deepest sleep of the trek.
