Distance is the hidden cost
The northern circuit looks compact on a map and is not. Arusha to the central Serengeti is a long driving day through Ngorongoro, and every day you shave off the itinerary comes out of game viewing time rather than travel time. That is the trade nobody mentions in a brochure.
Two days: a genuine taste
A two day trip works best focused on Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater, both close enough to Arusha to give you real time in the park rather than in the vehicle. You will see elephant, big cat if you are lucky in the crater, and enormous landscape. What you will not get is the Serengeti proper.
Four days: the sensible minimum for the Serengeti
Four days lets you sleep inside the Serengeti, which changes the trip entirely. Early morning is when the plains work, and you cannot buy early morning if you are still driving in from the crater rim. Add Tarangire on the way out and the week has shape.
Seven days: no compromises
A week gives you two nights in one Serengeti area and two in another, which is how you follow movement rather than chase it. It is also the length at which our guides stop optimising the route and start reading the animals, which is the part travellers remember.
