Packing for Kilimanjaro without carrying half of it.

The short list that matters, the gear worth renting in Moshi, and the three items travellers most often get wrong.

Packing for Kilimanjaro without carrying half of it.

Layers, not thickness

You will walk through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and arctic summit conditions in under a week. No single jacket covers that. Three thin layers plus a proper insulated outer beats two heavy ones every time, because you will be adjusting temperature constantly.

Rent the bulky things

Sleeping bags rated to minus ten, down summit jackets and trekking poles are all readily available to rent in Moshi and are quality checked before we hand them over. Flying them in from home costs you baggage fees and space you would rather spend on socks.

The three usual mistakes

New boots, worn for the first time on day one. Not enough warm gloves for summit night, which is the coldest four hours of the trip. And too little water capacity: three litres of carrying volume is the floor, because dehydration at altitude feels exactly like altitude sickness.

We send every traveller a full checklist once dates are confirmed, and our guides run a kit check the evening before you walk.
